Oct. 1, 2-5 p.m. Issues in Action: An Issues Management Discussion for Senior-Level Practitioners This session is limited to the first 50 senior communicators who register, and is designed for communicators with at least 15 years of business experience who are in a position requiring regular counsel to senior management. This special session for seasoned rock-and-rollers, who might relate more to Bruce and Sting than to Eminem and Coldplay, will focus on developing public support for an issue critical to your organization's success. Responding to controversy? How do you ensure that your organization's message is heard in the maelstrom of conflicting voices? Our panelists will discuss what works both internally and externally during a crisis. You'll then solve a case study based on best practices. Moderator: Bill Cryer is the executive counsel for public affairs for Samsung Austin Semiconductor L.P. He previously served as the company's vice president of corporate communications and gubernatorial press secretary to Ann Richards. Presenters: Robert Cullick, executive manager of customer service and communications for the Lower Colorado River Authority, Cullick is a veteran journalist and seasoned communicator, manager and strategist with nearly 30 years of experience. Under his guidance, LCRA's corporate communications staff has won dozens of local, state, national and international communications awards. Prior to joining LCRA, Cullick was an award-winning reporter for the Houston Chronicle and the Austin American-Statesman. He also held editorial positions with newspapers in Japan and New York. Jeff Eller, managing director for Public Strategies, Inc., directs the company's Crisis Communications Division. His most notable accomplishments have been in the area of crisis communications, where he has orchestrated the media, lobbying and communications strategy for several major corporations in high-profile crisis situations. Featured in The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes ASAP, Eller has used emerging technologies - such as satellites, computer networks, e-mail, fax broadcasting and the Internet - to successfully open new public-policy communications frontiers. Cathie Hargett, director of public affairs for Dell Computer Corporation, has practiced high-tech PR for 19 years. The first half of her career was spent at EDS, where she established that company's first corporate philanthropy program, served as a corporate spokesperson and as regional director of public relations. Since joining Dell in 1994, Hargett developed and managed Dell's first corporate media relations program, increasing Dell's coverage in business and financial media and earning a Silver Anvil in 1997. Hargett also established the company's public affairs program in 1998 and is the co-developer of Dell's crisis communications plan. Case Study Leader: Joanne Ureña has extensive experience in designing communications campaigns, directing strategies, developing messages and research, and implementing highly sensitive projects for organizations like MGT of America, Inc., Public Strategies, Inc., Nustats International, Instituto de Economía e Organización and Metropolitan Assistance Corporation. She has a master of business administration and a master of public affairs from The University of Texas at Austin, and a bachelor of arts from Harvard University. |
